Unit 60: Personal and Professional Development in Civil Engineering

This is assignment sheet given in Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering). This unit is about personal and professional development. Basically this unit is common in the most of the HND Courses. The main resolution of this unit is to manage self learning and methods for adapting.

Assignment title
Devise Personal Portfolio to Prepare for Career with an MNC
Scenario for Task 1, 2 and 3:

Visit www.myanmarjobsdb.com or www.work.com.mm (or other relevant media) and search for a job advertisement. The job advertisement must contain a realistic position with a multinational company that you would like to apply for after you graduate. Conduct further research about the position and the company that you choose.

You must print the job advertisement, get approval from your lecturer or tutor (he/she will sign the print out) and include it in your assignment. Failure to do this will automatically result in redo and/or restudy.

Complete all of tasks based on the assumption that you are applying for a job with this company and has been offered the position that you apply for.


Scenario for Task 4:

Senior managers of the company that you work for require your team (your class) to organise CSR or other related event. You are required to propose an action plan and successfully execute the event for the company.

Task 1 (LO 1: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and M1 and M2)

Task 1: Write a self reflection report on the following:

Evaluate approaches to self-managed learning that are relevant for you when you work in the company that you choose. (1.1)

Propose the ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be encouraged in the position and the company that you choose. (1.2)

Evaluate the benefits of self-managed learning to you and the company. (1.3)


To achieve M1, you would have shown an effective judgement and/or approach to the self assessment and personal development. This includes identifying and using suitable self learning approaches.

To achieve M2, you would have shown the use of learning style, self-managed learning approach and other theories and techniques for personal and professional development.
Task 2 (LO 2: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and M2, M3, amd D1)

Task 2: How would you take responsibility for your own professional development bythe following?

Evaluate your own current skills and competencies against professional standards and possible organisational objectives. To help you evaluate your current skills, you need to prepare CV that indicates your skills and competencies. You will then analyse your strengths and weaknesses. (2.1)

Identify own development needs and the activities required to meet them. Your development needs should be directed toward meeting job requirements of the position that you have chosen (2.2)

Identify development opportunities to meet current and future defined needs. (2.3)

Devise a personal and professional development plan based on identified needs. (2.4)

To achieve M2, you would have shown the use of learning style, self-managed learning approach and other theories and techniques for personal and professional development.

To achieve M3, an appropriate structure and approach has been used in the process of development of the Personal Development Plan. Presentation materials such as tables, graphs, Gantt charts, etc. as well as evidence of appropriate communication in the chosen context/ CSR event have been shown.

To achieve D1, you must draw conclusions and effectively show the link between learning needs & opportunities and PPD plan & actions taken. You mush show the critical reflection of your own learning against original PDP’s objectives.

Task 3 (LO 3: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and D1 and D3)

Discuss how you will implement and continually renew your own personal and professional development plan.

Discuss the processes and activities required to implement the development plan. (3.1)

Undertake and document development activities as planned. (3.2)

Reflect critically on own learning against original aims and objectives set in the development plan. (3.3)

Update the development plan based on feedback and evaluation. (3.4)

To achieve D3, you must demonstrate that convergent/lateral/creative thinking have been used in the process of development of your PDP. You must indicate that work- based problems in the chosen context / CSR event / other event have been effectively identified, analysed, and solved.

Task 4 (LO4: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and  M3, D2 and D3)

Select solutions to work based problems. (4.1)

Communicate in a variety of styles and appropriate manner at various levels. You will include all evidences that demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively with others while organising the event. In addition to this, you will also write a cover letter. (4.2)

Evaluate and use time management strategies (4.3)

To achieve M3, an appropriate structure and approach has been used in the process of development of the Personal Development Plan. Presentation materials such as tables, graphs, Gantt charts, etc. as well as evidence of appropriate communication in the chosen context / CSR event / other event  have been shown. 
To achieve D2, you must demonstrate the independence in the process of development of your PDP. You must indicate that activities in the chosen context/ CSR event have been planned, organised and managed.
To achieve D3, you must demonstrate that convergent/lateral/creative thinking have been used in the process of development of your PDP. You must indicate that work- based problems in the chosen context / CSR event / other event have been effectively identified, analysed, and solved.


Presentation
  1. The assignment should have a cover page that includes the assignment title, assignment number, course title, module title, Lecturer/tutor name and student’s name. Attach all the pages of assignment brief/achievement summary with your report and leave them blank for official use.
  1. Ensure that authenticity declaration has been signed.
  1. This is an individual assignment.
  1. Content sheet with a list of all headings and page numbers.
  1. A fully typed up professionally presented report document. Use 12 point Arial or Times New Roman script.
  1. Your assignment should be word-processed and should be 3,000 words in length.
  1. Use the Harvard referencing system.
  1. Exhibits/appendices are outside this limit.
  1. The assignment should contain a list of any references used in the report.
